Sickness during employment

In the Netherlands, employers are obliged to continue paying wages for up to two years in the event of an employee's illness, making it one of the few countries with such a provision. According to the Gatekeeper Improvement Act (Wet Verbetering Poortwachter), the fundamental principle is that the employee undergoes a medical assessment by a company doctor and actively participates in reintegration and the agreed-upon action plan. Should disputes arise regarding the specific obligations of either the employer or employee under this law, we stand ready to offer practical guidance on navigating the situation. By allowing us to assist you during the reintegration process in a timely manner, we can assist in averting potential sanctions from the UWV (the Dutch Authority assessing the efforts of the employer to reintegrate the employee). Such sanctions may include up to one year of continued wage payments.
